Classically Designed. Romantically Inspired.

A barn I helped build in Ashe County, NC.

The romantic mode is primarily inspirational, imaginative, creative, intuitive. Feelings rather than facts predominate. “Art” when it is opposed to “Science” is often romantic. It does not proceed by reason or by laws. It proceeds by feeling, intuition and esthetic conscience. In the northern European cultures the romantic mode is usually associated with femininity, but this is certainly not a necessary association.

The classic mode, by contrast, proceeds by reason and by laws… which are themselves underlying forms of thought and behavior. In the European cultures it is primarily a masculine mode and the fields of science, law and medicine are unattractive to women largely for this reason. Although motorcycle riding is romantic, motorcycle maintenance is purely classic.

Robert Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

When I read this passage I knew it was written for me. I was not supposed to understand it, only to remember it. I knew I was both, perhaps a rare breed of classical romantic. I have learned through the creation process that I am the hopeless, helpless, and hyper romantic. I am more artist than scientist, more designer than engineer, more strategist than analyst. But just as no PB&J is complete with out both staples, I would not be complete without my classical counterparts. My day to day activities and thus far the source of all my income has come from classical activities. Balance is essential. Knowing how leads to knowing when and knowing when is what we all want to know. When we find ourselves the gate keepers of knowledge for the masses, that friends, is a great place to be. I spent many hours getting the site to this condition.  Many more will be spent developing backend details, the world of the classically trained, tasks that I am not inclined to do. But the hours will be logged because romantic lust has glued me to this screen, bound by determination to see the visions of my mind appear in front of me, to appear in front of you.

Passion is the force that drives me. I want to make it the force that drives you too. Until that time, live loud and large may follow.

But you won’t care if it doesn’t.
